Farewell Letter

Dear Region 7B,

It has been an honor to serve as your lieutenant governor these past months. This will be the last newsletter that I will send out and I just wanted to thank you for the opportunity that you have given me. I have loved being your lieutenant governor.

I’ve experienced clubs of all different sizes, from clubs that have grown from ten to thirty members, to clubs that have to hold their meetings in their school auditorium because they are so big! I’ve loved all of the club visits that I’ve gone on, getting to hear all of the amazing stories that people have to tell.

I also want to thank everyone who has fundraised for Cystic Fibrosis. At our Spring Convention we will find out how much money our district has raised as a whole, and I’m hoping that our region will have significantly contributed toward reaching the lofty goal of $6,000. If you would like more roses to sell in the future, they’re still available to purchase for $0.07!

I came into my job as LTG a little bit later than others, and I’m so grateful that you guys were so willing to help me out along the way by providing contact information for your clubs, along with meeting times and all the other information I needed.

Thank you again, Region 7B; it has been an honor.

Cady Severson

What I've been up to... -April

Hey Key Clubbers,

This month I’ve been hard at work planning for the Spring Convention! I’ve almost finished all of the district board assignments that I’ve been assigned, and am planning on holding my last PCM (President Council Meeting) next week. I hope your club has had their officer elections and you have a new board, and I also hope that you have many people interested in attending Spring Convention. Don’t forget that it’s also time to mention ICON. If you didn’t read about ICON in my past newsletters, it will be held in Orlando, Florida this year from July 2nd-9th. If you’re planning on attending Spring Convention and are interested in going to ICON, attend the forum! Also, if you have any other specific questions regarding ICON and the district tour that goes along with the trip, email me anytime and I’d be happy to answer them!

I hope that all of you have had an amazing Key Club year!

Don't forget about our CF goal!

This year our Governor has a goal to raise $6,000 to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Has your club been raising money for CF? Did you sell wooden roses for Valentine’s Day? Did you hold a really creative fundraiser to benefit CF? Well, don’t forget that you can also participate in walks that are held to benefit CF. Following are two walks that are sponsored by CF in our area:

  • ·      May 5th- Minneapolis, Rochester, and Winona
  • ·     May 20th- Great Strides Walk- St. Paul, MN

Walks are a great way to get all of your members involved and in action. There isn’t a limit to the number of people who can participate! You can even join with other clubs in your school to raise money, for instance NHS!

Also, at Spring Convention we will be having a fundraising contest. For more information on the contest and rules, a flyer can be found on the cd that was included in your club’s Spring Mailing. We will award clubs for most money raised per member and for most creative fundraiser.

I still have wooden roses available for clubs to sell. Even though Valentine’s Day has passed, they can be a great idea for your club to sell for Mother’s Day!

What I've been up to... -March

Hi Key Clubbers,

I hope everyone has had a great month of service! I hope that your clubs have been active and that they are starting to elect a new board! With a new board comes new faces in all of the great leadership positions that are available. I hope that you have enjoyed your time on the board and will help the next officers do the same.

This month I’ve been very busy preparing for the convention, going on club visits, and volunteering. I’ve visited three clubs this month, Park, Kingsland and Woodbury. All of these clubs are doing very well and are super active and involved in their communities!

For the Woodbury visit, the president and I decided to do things a little differently. Instead of visiting during a club meeting, I was able to participate alongside other Woodbury Key Clubbers in the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) walk which was held at the Mall of America. It was an amazing experience, seeing everyone come together to support this cause. We walked through the halls of the Mall at 8 a.m., before any stores were even open! It was a super fun experience!  To the right you will find a picture that I took from the 4th level of the mall. This was only a very small percentage of the people that participated in this event.

Thinking of Running for a District Office?

Have you ever considered running for a district office? My year as LTG is rapidly coming to a close, but I’ve loved every minute of it! At Spring Convention we will caucus and elect new officials to the 2012-2013 Minn-Dak district board. Here are a few reasons why you should consider running for a district office:

-You get to work closely with not only your club, but also other clubs in the Minn-Dak District

-District board meetings are fun!

-You get to meet people from all around the district and work together to make the Minn-Dak district the best it can be!

-You get to plan all the things that go on during Spring Convention.

-You’ll get new ideas for your club by going on club visits.

What I've been up to... -February

Hey Key Clubbers,

I hope that you’ve had a great 2012 so far! This month I’ve been really busy with Key Club activities. In January, I visited the South St. Paul Key Club and found that they were just starting a school-wide fundraising campaign called Pennies for Patients. Last year, they were the smallest school to participate in the fundraiser and raised the largest amount of money for the organization! I loved seeing this because their Key Club is making a huge impact! I’ve also been working at getting wooden roses out to clubs so that they can sell them for Valentine’s Day.

On January 27th-29th, the district board got together and planned Spring Convention. I’m really looking forward to the convention. We planned fun, educational, and service project based forums, and got the spring mailing ready. Your clubs should be getting the spring mailing soon and in it you will find information concerning registration for Spring Convention! I hope everyone is planning on coming this year!

In our January meeting we also discussed the International Convention that’s coming up July 2nd-9th in Orlando, FL. ICON is sure to be a great Key Club experience. Please consider attending ICON to grow in your Key Club experience!

Also, don’t forget to hold club officer elections this month!

I hope everyone enjoys my convention edition newsletter!

Afternoon Meetings

A lot of the clubs in our region hold weekly morning meetings. However, afternoon meetings should also be considered. My club started afternoon meetings this year and we’ve been able to work with multiple organizations, helping them do things each time. During past afternoon meetings we have:

- Organized a haunted hallway benefitting the Rochester Public Schools Foundation

- Helped set up Paranoia

- Tied blankets to give to Ronald McDonald House

- Helped plan a senior citizens “Senior Prom”

- Put up posters around the school advertising the ELIMINATE Project

Afternoon meetings not only allow you to have more time with members, but they also allow you to do service projects during your meeting. It’s a very beneficial way to get members active and serving!

Paranoia!

Some of you may be wondering what Paranoia is. Well, Paranoia is a school-wide game of tag. But what does that mean? Basically, students pay $3 (or however much money you are going to sell the cards for) and they get their name entered into a randomizer. After everyone has entered, the names are put onto a card. The cards can be regular playing cards,  cardstock, or pretty much any kind of paper; this year Century High School used Star Wars playing cards.  All of the names are put on individual cards. Each card has a name on the front (the person’s card) and on the back (the name of the person they’re trying to find). Everyone picks up their own card to start playing the game. The game usually starts the day after the cards have been distributed or picked up.  Now, there are some basic rules. Also, it can be very fun to have teachers involved! People really get into Paranoia and they’ll be sprinting down the halls trying to tag their person or get to class on time. This year, all three Rochester high schools participated. Lots of people changed their names on Facebook so that the people chasing them wouldn’t be able to cyber stalk them. It’s really fun to get into the game! Key Club presented the winner with a $50 Target gift card. Paranoia is a really easy way to not only get the whole school involved in a really fun activity, but it can also be used as a marketing tool to grow your own Key Club!

What I've been up to... -January

Hey Key Clubbers!

I hope everyone had a really good holiday and break from school.  I also hope you had a chance to rack up some hours with all of the holiday season volunteering opportunities. Every year I love to volunteer with the Salvation Army and help with Christmas Anonymous.  The last few weeks before winter break, my school participates in a school-wide fundraiser. This year, all the money we raised (over $20,000!) benefitted Bear Creek Services and the Eagles Cancer Telethon. My home club organized Paranoia, a school-wide game of tag, and we raised over $600 to go toward the total. I was very proud to be part of those amazing activities.

We’re now in a new year and with that comes many exciting Key Club opportunities. Spring Convention is coming up and the district board will be getting together to plan the convention in just a few weeks! Don’t forget to mark April 20-22 on your calendars for this event!

I will be visiting two to three clubs this month and I’m really excited to get the chance to see the clubs in action.

I hope everyone has a great start to the new year!

What I've been up to... -December

Hey Key Clubbers!

I hope everyone is getting in a lot of service hours this holiday season. Whether it’s wrapping presents for a fundraiser, bell ringing for the Salvation Army, or caroling at a nursing home, you’re serving! I love serving during the holiday season because there are so many great opportunities!

I hope all of you who attended the K-Family Retreat enjoyed it, and for those that didn’t, it was certainly a fun event and I recommend attending next year. I helped plan the retreat this year; it was a lot of work but it was definitely worth it.

I’m also excited to announce that I have visited half of the clubs in Region 7B! If I haven’t visited your club yet, or even if I have, and there’s a fun service project that you are planning during the holiday season, please contact me and tell me about it. I’d love to come and participate in it if possible!

Have a safe and happy holiday,

Cady Severson

What I've been up to... -November

Hey Key Clubbers,

I hope everyone’s club is really getting underway with everything! I know my club has tons of volunteer opportunities coming up because of Halloween!

I’m super excited about the K-Family Retreat that is coming up. If you haven’t already heard, it will take place at Ironwood Springs Christian Ranch November 18th-20th.  Our international trustee, Lucy McDermott, is going to be coming and she’s going to be in our very own region. I’ve been planning a lot of fun events that are going to take place at the retreat! Also, don’t forget that we are going to have an ELIMINATE 5K Run/Walk at the retreat. If you can’t make it for the whole weekend, that’s fine, just come to the event and help us ELIMINATE maternal/neonatal tetanus from the face of the earth. I’m really excited about the retreat and have been super busy planning everything. I hope everyone has an amazing time at the retreat.

Also, I’ve started my club visits! I’ll be visiting your club at least once this year and I’ll hopefully get the chance to talk to you about what we’re doing, not only in our district, but internationally!

I hope you’re all having a great school and key club year so far!

What's been Happening? -October

This month, everyone’s club got underway! I hope everyone is really excited for the Key Club year! In my home club, we started fundraising for Cystic Fibrosis by selling wooden roses. We sold them for four days and raised $250! If your club is interested in selling wooden roses, contact me anytime. Also, I’ve been busy planning the K-Family Retreat and the Region 7 FLEE. I’d recommend getting your registration in soon for the K-Family Retreat. The Region 7 FLEE is October 14th-15th at Henry Sibley and it’s going to be so much fun!

I hope you’ve gotten the Back-to-School mailing for your Key Club. In the package, you should find valuable information like the first edition of the Minn-Dak Quack K-Family Edition. We finally finished our first edition and we’re all super proud of it! The registration form for the K-Family Retreat is also in it and important dates to remember for our district.

I’ve also of course been busy with work and school but if you ever have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask!
