Meet Your Keynote Speaker

Growing up as the eldest of his siblings, Darryl W. Thomas Jr. was no stranger to adversity. Born into challenging circumstances, he quickly learned the value of resilience and responsibility. With the weight of his family’s well-being on his shoulders, Darryl discovered an early passion for leadership, determined to help his brother and sisters navigate through life’s difficulties.

Darryl faced a devastating setback when he lost his father to domestic violence, a traumatic event that left him questioning his ability to protect and support his family. This profound loss, coupled with the promise he made to his father to take care of his younger brother Quincy, weighed heavily on him. This period of his life was marked by emotional turmoil and the struggle to find a path forward without succumbing to thoughts of retaliation and despair.

Determined not to let his father’s death define his future, Darryl channeled his grief into positive action. He joined the Marine Corps straight out of high school, where he honed his leadership skills and learned the importance of commitment, resilience, and strategic thinking. His time in the Marine Corps provided him with a professional foundation in leadership, which he later applied to his work with at-risk youth. By focusing on teaching these young people to see themselves as leaders, Darryl began to transform his pain into a mission of empowerment.
